Laboratory Research

The main research focus is the use of Canadian agricultural residues and food waste as feedstocks for the synthesis of polymers and specialty chemicals. The research team works to convert agricultural feedstocks into bio-based materials and chemicals that mimic or offer improved properties compared with their petroleum-based counterparts.

There is currently a global effort to develop promising bio-based chemicals and materials to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to sustainable development. These chemicals and materials can be used in a wide range of applications, including food packaging, automotive components, biofuels, water decontamination, agriculture, and healthcare applications.

Most biomaterials are costly to produce, which negatively affects their commercialization potential. Since the biomass used is primarily destined for composting or landfills, significant cost advantages for industry could therefore be achieved through its valorization.
