Equipment Description

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is a spectroscopic technique that uses electrons emitted when a surface is exposed to X-ray radiation to determine its composition. Each element has core electrons that require a specific amount of energy to be ejected from the atom, making it possible to determine the qualitative or semi-quantitative composition of a sample. This technique can also be used to determine the types of chemical bonds present at the surface of a material.

In the laboratory, the XPS spectrometer is primarily used for surface characterization of materials (metals, polymers, powders, and nanoparticles deposited on silicon or gold wafers). It can identify the elements present and monitor changes in atomic composition resulting from surface modifications, as well as determine the chemical environment of specific elements (i.e., the chemical bonds present).
