Research Tools and Instruments Grant Program

OIR (Research Tools and Instruments) grants aim to foster and enhance the discovery, innovation and research training capacity of university researchers in natural sciences and engineering by supporting the purchase of research equipment.

The NSERC Grant Program, which provides support of up to $150,000, is the primary source of funding available to university researchers in the natural sciences and engineering for the purchase of research tools and instruments with a net cost between $7,001 and $250,000. Net cost is defined as the purchase price of the requested equipment after any discounts offered by the supplier and before taxes, customs and import duties, transportation and shipping costs, and assembly and installation costs. The supplier discount cannot be offered in exchange for services rendered by users to the supplier's business. The research community is encouraged to seek other sources of funding for research tools and instruments, such as other NSERC programs under which equipment purchases are eligible expenses.
