To change the varnish appearance, solid particles like iron oxide particles are added to the varnish compositions before the drying process. However, incorporating the iron oxide particles in the varnish is challenging due to magnetic attraction between particles. To overcome this challenge, we used core–shell polymer iron particles instead of plain particles since the polymer shell provides a better capability of particle dispersion in the varnish. This image presents iron oxide particles (black core) encapsulated by polymer (cloudy area). The polymer shell is mainly for protecting the core from oxidation and thermal effect.
In addition, it prevents magnetic particles agglomeration.
After synthesizing iron oxide particles through solvothermal method for 48 hours, the core-shell structure was prepared through in situ polymerization.
