Wilhelmy Balance

Laboratory

NSERC–Canlak Industrial Research Chair in Interior Wood Products Finishing

Department

Department of Wood and Forest Sciences

Manufacturer (Model)

Krüss (K14)

Equipment Description

This instrument is used to measure the equilibrium surface tension of a liquid. It consists of a thin plate connected to a precision balance and positioned perpendicular to the liquid surface. When the plate is partially immersed in the liquid, the forces acting on it are detected by the balance. The instrument can also be used to measure contact angles.

Applications span a wide range of nanotechnology fields, including the characterization of biomembranes and molecular interactions, the study of organic and inorganic coatings, as well as the analysis of surfactants and colloids.

Areas of Expertise

  • Surface Tension

  • Thin Films
