Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA)

Laboratory

NSERC–Canlak Industrial Research Chair in Interior Wood Products Finishing

Department

Department of Wood and Forest Sciences

Manufacturer (Model)

Bruker (Q800)

Equipment Description

This technique is used to measure the mechanical properties of viscoelastic solids, including the complex Young's modulus, complex shear modulus, and complex viscosity. It can also be used to determine transition temperatures, such as the glass transition temperature (Tg) and crystallization temperature of polymers. The instrument is equipped with a humidity module that enables the measurement of moisture content in a sample.

Technical Specifications

  • Force range: 0.0001 to 18 N

  • Measured modulus range: 10³ to 3 × 10¹² Pa

  • Modulus measurement accuracy: 1%

  • Dynamic sample displacement: 0.5 to 10,000 µm

  • Temperature range: −150°C to 600°C

  • Heating and cooling rate: 0.1 to 20°C/min
