Equipment Description
This microscope is equipped with polarizing filters that enable the observation of birefringence in materials with varying degrees of crystallinity. Crystalline materials split incident light into two polarized components along different optical axes. By blocking one of these polarized components, highly contrasted images can be obtained, allowing the degree of crystallinity of the material to be assessed. This technique is particularly useful for the characterization of mineral films, polymers, and cellulose in wood.
The instrument is also equipped with a CCD camera and Image-Pro Plus version 4.0 image analysis software.
